Alumnae Leadership Council Report October 24-26, 2003
The Miami Wellesley Club was fortunate to have 5 Miami Wellesley members attend the 2003 ALC: Jo Anne Chester Bander Kristin Barbieri Tracey Bowen Kathy Fraga and Noelle Galperin As always, ALC is a wonderful way to keep up to date on happenings on campus and around other clubs. Noelle presented her ideas and successes in running a medium-sized club, Kristin got some new ideas on communicating with the club (hence this newsletter) and we all got updates on the Campaign for $400 million as well as services provided by the college such as the Center for Work and Service.
As of October 1, 2003, the Campaign for $400 million had raised $328.9 million. The final push for $400M will be the toughest and the college urges your participation. The major goals of the campaign are advancing the liberal arts ideal, enhancing community, extending Wellesley reach, and strengthening Annual Giving. Our last campaign, which ended in 1992, had a goal of $150 million and raised $168 million record for a liberal arts college! In terms of Miami participation, we have had 105 donors out of a base of 193 for a participation rate of 54%. Wee in the middle of the pack: Dayton, Ohio leads participation percentages with 81% of their 27 Wellesley women donating. Of the medium sized clubs, Eastern Maine leads with 79% of their 115 alums donating!
The Wellesley Center for Work and Service is willing and able to help you with any work or service transitions you may have. They have Myers-Briggs testing, free counseling, a website with lots of goodies and of course, availability of the Alumnae Networking. You can find them here: http://www.wellesley.edu/CWS/In other college news, the new Davis Parking facility (next to the Sports Center) will be finished in the winter of 2004, the Wang Campus Center in December 2004, and the Alumnae Valley restoration in Spring 2005. I can resist a little editorial comment to say that I find the campus more beautiful than ever, especially the lakefront!

Visit to Kerry Orchid & Bromeliad Nursery in Homestead November 15, 2003:
Over 50 Miami Wellesley Club members and their guests came to hear about orchid and bromeliad growing from Kerry Herndon, the husband of Miami WC co-president Nancy Harter. We toured part of the 1.6 million square foot facility, marveling at the automated sorting, the huge flats of gorgeous plants, and the efficiency of the Toyota production system "lean flow" manufacturing process used at the nursery. We were lucky that the nursery was in full swing on a Saturday: all those orders coming in for Thanksgiving. Kerry was an amusing and very informed presenter: he has been in the business since he was 17 years old. Nancy also got involved directing traffic and driving the pickup vehicle when we strayed! Many of us bought more bromeliads and orchids than we can possibly plant in this calendar year (oops, maybe that was just me). It was a fascinating and unusual day, and our greatest thanks to Kerry and Nancy for opening up the doors to us!
Upcoming Event:
Mona Lisa Smile, December 20, 2003 matinee at Sunset Place AMC Movie Theatre
Take a break from all your holiday shopping to join your sister Wellesleys at a showing of Mona Lisa Smile starring Julia Roberts. The movie is based on the story of a Berkeley graduate who comes to teach at Wellesley in the 1950s, and touches on some of the issues of the day (let see if they are real or just Hollywood!) After the movie, we will be going back to Linda Dann house for some holiday cheer and to hear the perspectives of some 1950s alums, and Vicki Raines and Kathy Fraga will talk about some of the emotions that ran high during filming on campus. Actual movie time and meeting place to be sent out soon! Reserve your place with Kristin Barbieri by e-mail kdykema@alum.wellesley.edu or by phone 305-759-3380. Guests are welcome!
